Shaina’s Chanukah Cleanse

I’m in the process of setting up my own 8-day plan below. And to be honest, it’s a work in progress… so please send in your thoughts and suggestions!

I’ve recognized that in my hectic life, it’s important for me to dedicate more time to eating in the company of other people. So I’ve prioritized it as my first goal – I just hope I can sustain it throughout the 8 nights! And I’m looking forward to celebrating the last night of Chanukah by delivering cookies to a neighbor.

Shaina’s Sample Chanukah Cleanse Plan:

  • 1. Eat at least one meal a day with other people
  • 2. 1 + Prepare food to share with others
  • 3. 1 + 2 + Eat one meal a day on the cleanse
  • 4. 1 + 2 + 3 + Avoid GMO ingredients in all food
  • 5. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + Cook with unfamiliar grains/veggies
  • 6. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + Investigate sourcing/supply chain for one main ingredient of each meal
  • 7. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + Produce zero non-compostable waste in meal preparation
  • 8. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + Deliver cookies to a neighbor

What would food-related actions would you like to incorporate into your lifestyle?

  1. Shaina, I know I am biased, but I really do think this is an incredibly clever and creative Chanukah idea. You tied the holiday themes and the cumulative goals (just like the Chanukah candles) in so well .

At first I thought, I can’t do this. I have so many goals I already can’t accomplish and they’re not even food related, like cleaning out my closets. I briefly thought that maybe I could do my own variation of a non-food related “cleanse”. But as I thought about it, I realized that the way one does anything, is the way one does everything. The themes in my everyday life are the very same themes that crop up in my food life. Starting with my food world might get me off my paralysis in the rest of my world. So here’s the beginning of my Chanukah cleanse goals…as they relate to food…

    1. Clean and organize one kitchen drawer or cabinet
    2. 1+ buy only fresh produce and fruit that you need for the next few days and only use non perishable or frozen food items that you already have in the house or freezers.
    3. 1+2+ eat meals only, sitting down, food on a plate with appropriate silverware…no snacking or picking up a bite to eat on the go.
    4. 1+2+3+ no second helpings, what you put on your plate the first time is all you get.
    5. 1+2+3+4+ throw out or give away one food or kitchen item, utensil or product.
    6. 1+2+3+4+5+ clean and throw out old food from one freezer
    7. 1+2+3+4+5+6+ clean and throw out old food from one refrigerator
    8. 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+ donate groceries and paper goods to the CJFS food closet

Thank you again for your inspiration and for motivating me to push my personal envelope!

    Love,
    Mom
